The Steadiness of Faith

One week in Seattle. We’ve gotten used to driving in traffic, so much traffic. Learning to truly trust in the GPS to get us where we need to go, as we seek to adjust to life in the suburbs of a big city. Been relieved to lay eyes on our other vehicle that was transported from MS to WA and parked at our daughter’s house. Plus, we think we’ve kinda decided on an area we would like to live, depending on availability and affordability. Its been a busy week!

In the meantime, we’re moving out of the Extended Stay America hotel! Thanks to our girl and her connections at the church where she works. We have been invited to stay at a home for the next two weeks. The homeowners – mission’s pastors – welcomed us in, showed us around and twenty minutes later handed us their house keys. Who does that? They were scheduled to leave the following morning on an international trip. Twenty minutes of relationship, a sharing of hearts, and a confident trust was extended. Simply because of the One who directs the steps of those who seek to be obedient in the big and small things of life.

As we continue on this grand adventure, our faith barometer keeps rising!

My man goes to arrange our check out details at the front desk. He reminds the receptionist of the $50 discount that was offered when we checked in seven days ago. She says actually, sir, its a 50 PERCENT discount. Slighty taken back, he says “Are you sure?” She checks again and says “Yes, sir. Its a 50% discount.” Wow, how does stuff like that happen?

Within the last week of our house-sitting assignment, a job opportunity presented itself to my man, via our daughter. One of her roomates asked her if she knew of anyone who needs a job, that there was a job opening in the church’s Operations and Maintenance department. Did she ever! My man interviewed and within three weeks was hired and working.

Meanwhile in that same week we began house-hunting. We found a townhome advertised, went to look at it and decided to keep looking. As we were driving out of the complex, I saw a “For Rent” sign in the window of another townhome around the corner from the one we had just seen. I called, the owner answered and said he could be there in ten minutes, he just “happened” to be in the area. We looked, we liked and said we’d like to apply, but here’s the deal: We had no local references, but did have job referances from former employers in MS. We were currently unemployed, but my man was waiting on an job interview answer. We had the required funds to secure the townhome and would willingly provide bank statements as proof. He said he would get back to us. Sure! As we drove off we shot up an arrow prayer of trust and continued direction if this was not the place for us. Later that evening the owner called saying he wouldn’t normally do something like this, but “there was just something about us” that he could trust and the unit was ours if we wanted it. Thank you Lord! It would become our home for the next seven years.

By faith. We had left the Gulf Coast and journied to the Pacific Northwest. By faith. We had trusted in His provision for every part of the journey. By faith. We saw and felt the tangible evidence of His love and His care for us. And its by faith we continue on …..

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.” (Phililppians 4:19)

I was revisited today by an illustration I heard years ago about a ship and a train.

My pastor was sharing about living by faith, and illustrated his thought by contrasting the experience of traveling somewhere on a ship versus on a train.

As most of us have discovered, when you’re on a train the feeling underneath your feet is very certain, secure, predictable, and reassuring. You can sense that you are clearly moving forward in the direction you are intending to go. There is no back and forth, or side to side–just forward.

However, when you are traveling by boat, your experience couldn’t be any different than that of a train. The feeling underneath your feet is unpredictable, uncertain, and even anxiety-producing at times. Furthermore, there is just water! There are no indestructible steel train tracks, no visible markings indicating that you are connected or harnessed to something stable.

About Ava

I simply love life - the ups& downs, the round-a-bouts, the stops and starts, the uphill climbs and the downhill slides. It all makes me the person I am as a wife, mother of 5, grandmother, friend, follower of Christ. You can't have one part of me without getting the other.
